• ishgardian sex/gender politics writing in canon often incomplete and frustrating

• gender breakdown of characters makes it hard to write m/f and nigh-impossible to write f/f

• occasional tiresome whining about “fujoshis” and “girly men” from insecure assholes

• the looming ship war on the horizon that is absolutely primed to use opinions about which lizards should kiss which other lizards as a litmus test for every facet of contemporary sex/gender politics and thus whether or not one is a Good Person or Actually Garbage involves only lizards. no elfs. one can ship in relative peace and quiet.

quite honestly, if you want an example of how strict and nonsensical the gamer masculinity policing can get, look no further than complaints of MMO elves being “girly” lol. WoW had this too, with blood elf men who are by any reasonable standard buff as hell. Meanwhile male elezen are, for the most part, depicted with chiseled, sometimes downright craggy features and muttonchops and biceps you could break a board over, but the dudebro contingent still feels they somehow project insufficient amounts of rugged masculinity to assuage their egos.

at any rate the top Stormblood ship is Lyse/Alisaie anyway, which is 50% elf content, even if the twins are atypical elfs because their appearance is so well established at this point that they’ll probably never enter the pointy+noodly stage
