Nerdcatte Honesty Hour

  • Their first impression: “Oh…I don’t like the way he’s looking at me. I suppose I don’t like the way almost anyone looks at me. An avowed hunter of monsters? Trouble. Definitely trouble. Danger too. Such folk always think with their sword-arms and possess no sense of inquiry. Oh, he’s Ishgardian? That’s worse. I hope Atlan doesn’t say anything untoward.”
  • Their current impression: “So far, refreshingly reasonable. I suppose we are rather in the same line of work, though depressingly few would see it such. Easy to talk to, surprisingly easy…is it because he’s a healer? No, can’t be, I’ve known plenty of healers. I wonder if it’s because we’re more alike than I initially realized. I can’t be certain, of course, but I do get the impression he’s trying to leave something in his past. More alike than I realized, yes.”
  • What they like the most about your muse: “He’s the only Ishgardian I’ve never managed to offend in the course of ordinary conversation. That’s a nice change.”
  • What they dislike the most about your muse: “Though he’s easy enough to talk to, he’s difficult to read. Not that I’m terribly good with people, but…well, I sometimes catch a glimpse of secrets, and while I understand secrecy — I really do! – I also have never been able to fully trust something I cannot entirely dissect. Metaphorically speaking, of course.”
  • What your muse is for them ( Friend, lover, rival ecc.): “A colleague at the moment, though I…hesitate to say…perhaps…a friend?”
  • A general opinion of their relationship: “I have never found time spent with Idristan to be without merit thus far.”

Send me📝 and my muse will reveal their thoughts about your muse.

OOC: Okay normally I don’t do these but….

Spoiler Alert: it probably won’t be nice

Biological Family

Father: Unknown – As is typical for tribal Moonkeepers, Rinha’li never met his father, whose contribution to his children’s lives was limited to the production phase, as it were. His father’s name was marked down in the extensive genealogical records his tribe (and most in the area) kept, but they are likely lost now. He would not recognize his father if he met him, nor could he even call his name immediately to mind.

Mother: Deceased (likely) – Although he has hardly gone back to check, it is almost certain that Rinha Dhavha, Rinha’li’s mother, died either in the voidsent attack that wiped out the majority of his relatives or sometime thereafter.

Siblings: Elder brothers Rinha’a (confirmed dead in the Calamity) and Rinha’to (whereabouts unknown). Three elder sisters – Adiha, Jhanna, and Njeri (likely deceased) and one younger sister Kibwe (also deceased)

Other: He was particularly close as a child to his cousin Lhira (deceased) and suspects that he bears a blood relation to a Keeper scholar he recently met by the name of Ibi Shigo, though obviously issues with his family have thus far held him back from investigating further.

Pets

A tame and (thankfully) mute peacock named Penelope, who skulks around the house keeping it clear of vermin and pecking at things. Rinha’li stole the bird from a residence down the street because its owners were keeping it confined to a tiny cage and it was making Atlan sad. Not one of his more rational decisions, probably. The bird is actually relatively friendly towards most people except Saerdha, whom he perceives as some kind of rival.

Rin is capable of summoning two carbuncles, both of which he calls Skiver: a traditional emerald one and a sooty creature of lampblack. Both sorts are mischievous and ill-tempered.

Skills

Rinha’li has a natural talent for numbers and figures, making him something of a walking calculator with cat ears. As a result he took to the art of the arcanist quite readily. He also learned to read and write Eorzean earlier in life than might be expected, as an attempt to make himself useful in communicating with more far-flung tribes and encroaching Gridanians, and can take notes fairly quickly in shorthand.

Hailing from the Shroud, he has more of the woodsman about him than might initially appear – though not exactly physically rugged, if you drop him into a forest he’s likely to be able to find food and shelter and not accidentally ingest or step on anything poisonous, at least.

In addition to being a competent arcanist, Rin has learned basic thaumaturgy, although he displays neither the talent nor the enthusiasm for the art that he does for arcanima. He does, however, love the history of magic – particularly the conflict between the black mages of Mhach and the white mages of Amdapor – and has a sometimes worryingly hands-on body of knowledge regarding the Void and its creatures.

Hobbies

His practice of arcanima lends itself well to more mundane calligraphy and lettering, and he will sometimes sketch a bit with charcoal though he is hardly any great talent. He loves reading, obviously, and has a particular fondness for architecture, particularly of the monumental type. He can sometimes be found perusing blueprint records or simply wandering around looking at interesting structures in Ul’dah or elsewhere. Though he lives above a coffeehouse, he prefers tea.

Traits

Positive Traits: Inquisitive, intelligent, sympathetic in spirit, open-minded, and resourceful, generally speaking fairly kind-hearted and willing to lend an ear.

Negative Traits: reckless (with his own life if not others), insecure, easily bullied, socially awkward, sometimes condescending, dismissive of tradition and authority as a rule, will never ever mind his own business, and possesses a deeply buried cold-blooded vengeful streak. Blithely does a lot of things (grave-robbing for example) that many people would consider extremely off-putting at the very least.

Thing he hates about himself: Feels guilty about the fact that he doesn’t feel guilty for his likely role in the death of most of his close family and relatives. Fears that at some point when the chips are down and he has to choose between some of his closely-guarded ambitions and the people he’s become close to, he’s going to end up making the wrong choice. Wishes he were less afraid of people and could face social confrontations with at least a little of the bold devil-may-care attitude with which he faces dangerous field research.

Three words people would use to describe him:

Weird Uncomfortable Nerd

Likes

Colors: Grey, blue, silver, dark red

Smells: Lavender, ash, blood, vetiver, lily

Textures: parchment, wet ink, thick linen, powdered pigment, rotting wood, weathered marble, thick sticky tar

Drinks: Black tea, clear water, fresh pomegranate juice

Other Details

Smokes: Only once or twice

Drinks: Occasionally

Drugs: Used to take sleeping droughts, but not so much anymore. Has a certain amount of familiarity with psychoactive flora but tends to avoid anything mind-affecting in general.

Mount Issuance: An ill-tempered domestic show-bird he calls Bentbeak, which he loves unreservedly even though it seems to hate him violently. The bird is stolen (it was an accident, somehow).

Arrested: Nearly executed, actually, by his original tribe in the Shroud. Once had to have someone come bail him out of jail in Gridania for trying to break into a library. Never caught for panicking and riding off with someone else’s chocobo in Camp Drybone, though he hasn’t actually ever gotten the nerve to go back there.

Voice Inspiration – Lebeaux

“You were made to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel.“

Posh, pompous and utterly perfect. Not too deep but absolutely dripping with holier-than-though snobbishness. Ideally I’d go find a french actor but I’m not really familiar.

“Are you ever not going to fall for that?”

“Please tell me you’re going to appeal to my humanity.”

Tagging @saerdha (since we were just discussing this) @black-omen-born and I think she already got the rest of my usual suspects

Ok, well, I usually just kind of look the other way when I get pings for voice claims, face claims, and music, because I’m bad at remembering voices and faces and also do not really listen to music much (everyone can commence horrified gasps or whatever) and wouldn’t want to admit my taste in music publicly if I did

but coincidentally I was JUST thinking about this the other day, and I think Orson Bean as Bilbo in The Hobbit (the 1977 animated version which I love unironically, and which features a lot of good voice acting because they hired veterans of the radio drama era) sort of influenced the tone of Rin’s voice a lot more than I had consciously realized. The part where he responds to a threat of being killed and eaten with a horrified “Oh, I SAY!” is particularly on point.

Rin’s voice is maybe a touch deeper than this, and he has an extremely weird accent – the result of growing up in the Shroud backwoods and then deliberately training yourself to sound like a Limsan intellectual in a matter of months – but off the top of my head, this is probably the best match.Â
